Awesome. I can’t believe the FDA and American Cancer Society aren’t helping get this thing tested and approved. Oh wait, ye$ I can.
Joel Spivak, a spokesman for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said the [electronic cigarette] seems to be aimed at circumventing indoor smoking laws and luring smokers to a so-called alternative to cigarettes.
“The issue, at least as far as we are concerned, is safety, because nobody knows what is in them,“ he said. “They are obviously a nicotine delivery device, so the FDA has asserted authority over shipments coming into United States. Until such time as the FDA says that the vapor that these things emit is safe, we don’t see how anybody would want to ingest that stuff into their lungs.“ (source)
Hi Joel. I like to use first names when talking to people like you just in case you ever see this, you’ll know I’m not just spouting off into oblivion. I’m thinking specifically of you while I write this.
Quite frankly Joel, you’ve pissed me off with that statement. You know why? Because it makes you sound ignorant, and I can’t imagine that a man in your position would want that kind of image. But just in case anyone disagrees with me at first glance, I’d like to explain myself and your statement to make sure every knows you’re a dumbass.
You say,
“The issue, at least as far as we are concerned, is safety, because nobody knows what is in them”
You know exactly what’s in them. Sure there’s some fly-by-night companies out there making their own brew, but the original source of the product not only has made “what is in them” public knowledge, they conducted clinical studies in New Zealand on the side-effects of inhalation. I’ve read the report several times (found online, free to the public) and though it was decided further testing should be done, the results on this test were all green. So if you need to know what is in them to calm your concerns about safety, you may ask me, or check out this awesome site called Google. You can find anything. Literally, it’s amazing.
Next sentence,
“They are obviously a nicotine delivery device, so the FDA has asserted authority over shipments coming into United States.”
Yes, Joel. Obviously. But hey, interesting note about the FDA’s sudden involvement in all of this. CNN reported in August of 2007 that Chinese company and manufacturer Ruyan was working with an American company to get FDA approval. In mid-2007. At the time, analysts stated that electronic cigarette providers would be lucky to gain 1% of the U.S. Market. 1% of the market would be $750,000,000. Well guess what, last year one company sold over 600,000 units. Whoops. Now the FDA has approximately over 800,000 smokers pissed off at them for stopping one of the most innovative products from entering their country. Stop acting like this was an over-night event, Joel. What are you really scared of?
“Until such time as the FDA says that the vapor that these things emit is safe, we don’t see how anybody would want to ingest that stuff into their lungs.”
Oh that’s right, safety. Yes. And the FDA, the same FDA that nullified the New Zealand clinical study because it was conducted outside the U.S., is the only voice of reason when it comes to public safety. Right.
Let me explain something to you, Joel. Smokers are addicts. We’re addicted to nicotine, not cigarettes. A lot of us have attempted to quit, and failed miserably. Over and over again. Cigarettes are lethal. You agree with that, right? Let’s put it this way. Smokers see the e-cigarette as opportunity. Smokers know they’re killing themselves, and if even an unhealthy alternative came about, it would offer enough comfort just to know that we were killing ourselves more slowly. So, that is “how anybody would want to ingest that stuff into their lungs.”
Listen, I understand you’re also concerned about non-smokers and kids. But your statement extends far beyond that. You’re helping to support a decision be made for smokers. So what is it, Joel?
Are you completely ignorant or sorely misinformed?
